Coaching

I’m a certified leadership coach. I specialize in working with early to mid-career professionals mainly in the technology sector. I help my clients move up faster, so they have more influence, make a bigger impact, and take control of their future.

What is coaching? It’s best described with examples from my practice:

  • Supporting a female VP to find her voice on a male-dominated executive team in a male-dominated industry.
  • Helping a mid-level manager decide whether to accept a significant promotion in another state.
  • Working with an EVP on relieving work-related stress affecting his health and balancing work within life.
  • Developing strategies with a young, high-potential technical talent to accelerate her upward mobility into management and leadership.
  • Helping to identify a CFO’s leadership style and align his communication skills and presence to be most effective.
  • Working with a newly promoted engineering manager to undo ineffective practices from her days as an individual contributor and to develop new skills to succeed in her current role.

The role of a coach is to help clients help themselves. The coach provides a reasoned and structured process to facilitate change, growth, and achievement. That said, coaching is as much art as science and, as such, the coach/client relationship must be vulnerable and trusting. Both coach and client must be open to unexpected outcomes.

My passion and my purpose are to help people progress along their individual paths. The client will be motivated and equipped to develop further. They will be encouraged to develop their skills and identify and remove interference to ensure an immediate and sustainable impact. The benefit to both the client and their company is powerful and profitable.

Facilitation

I’m a trained and certified facilitator. I specialize in creating customized workshops for cross-functional teams, mainly in the tech industry, who need to accomplish something critical “as a team.” I help my clients achieve their workshop goals through working better as a team, reaching consensus, and building commitment to continue moving forward.

Facilitation begins with the act of organizing a meeting, event, or workshop, and engaging the participants in understanding, exploring, creating, inventing solutions, or solving problems.

Facilitation goes beyond just the superficial management of meetings. It encompasses creating an environment of trust, encouraging open communication, fostering collaboration, and ensuring a commitment to achieving desired outcomes.

My approach is to meet with the workshop sponsor and any other key stakeholders. We’ll cover the objectives, required outputs, participants, and logistics.  I’ll create an initial workshop agenda, including proposed approach, flow, examples of activities, and budget for your consideration. We’ll iterate two or three times, drilling down on the agenda each time until we are comprehensively prepared.

And I’ll interview participants and other stakeholders, in advance, as appropriate.

We’ll all come to the workshop with a clear plan of action, and at the same time, be flexible and creative to accommodate the dynamics of the group.

Active Learning

I’m a mature and experienced Active Learning trainer. I specialize in creating and delivering customized, interactive, and vibrant learning environments for cross-functional teams mainly in the tech industry. I help my clients develop the skills needed to be more effective and move up faster, the strengths required to thrive at all levels, and the attributes critical to success.

The hands-on skills you’ll learn through my Active Learning workshops will change your outlook and possibly your life!

The workshops include a unique set of topics, exercises, videos, practice, insightful coaching, and full participation – this isn’t training, this is Active Learning. We provide a safe environment for you to explore current strengths and weaknesses. The events leverage group feedback, synergy and energy. The experience is fun, energizing, and highly effective at improving both short and long-term performance.

I teach what I know. My Active Learning focuses on the human elements of leadership. The workshops are based on the following Enduring Presence Leadership Model and can include any individual or combination of elements, skills, or behaviors – based entirely on client needs and requirements.

About Me

Sam believes his clients are capable of change and improvement with the right support. He brings a powerful positive energy by applying his talents/skills in alignment with his philosophy and purpose

He has been consulting, coaching, and managing his entire 30-plus year career. Sam founded Enduring Presence in 2018 to focus exclusively on executive coaching and leadership building.

Sam has learned from both his successes and failures as an executive in such companies as Capgemini, Ernst & Young, Hewlett Packard, and Oracle/Netsuite. He has also had the opportunity to observe other leaders in action and to help many young professionals develop the leadership skills necessary for success.

He is a trained and Certified Executive Coach through the UC Berkeley Executive Coaching Institute (BECI) under the direction of  Mark Rittenberg, Ed. D. Sam also holds a certification from the International Coach Federation (ICF).

Sam is also trained and certified in a number of relevant assessment and planning tools. He as a Finance degree from San Jose State University and an MBA from UC Berkeley, Haas School of Business.

Sam lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Jenny.
